All you need to know before you start...

  • When and where do we get together?
Class starts at 6.30pm on Monday nights and run for approximately 1hour. We meet at the Capalaba Uniting Church Hall, 32 Ney Road. Parking is around the back, entry off Zandra St. Due to Covid restrictions class numbers are limited, please contact me prior to attending class.
  • Is there a joining fee, how much do classes cost?"
No! There is currently no joining fee. Classes are $10 to be paid weekly. I'm currently running a special, pay for 4 classes and receive the 5th class for free.
  • What do I wear?
Always wear something comfortable and that you can move easily in: Top - You need to wear something comfortable but tight enough fitting on your top half so you can see what your belly and chest are doing. Also, I recommend you wear a good, supportive bra or sports top. Bottom - Feel free to wear a long skirt, shorts, leggins or whatever you feel comfortable and free to move in. Feet - Most people choose to dance in bare feet however feel free to bring some socks or ballet slippers.
  • Do I have to show my belly?
No! I won't be asking you to show your belly at any time and I will not ask you to wear or do anything that you are not comfortable with.
  • What do I bring with me to class?
Your coin belt or a scalf to tie around your hips to highlight your movements. Due to Covid restrictions the kitchen is currently out of bounds so please ensure you bring your own water bottle. I suggest you bring a small towel to wipe your face, it can get quite hot dancing in the hall, and also a larger beach towel or yoga mat to sit on while we are cooling down.
  • Common Concerns
    * I can’t move like that That’s why you come to class, to learn how to move you body in all sorts of amazing ways. In everything we do, we need to be shown how to do it first, we are not born knowing how to belly dance. To be able to isolate your body and only move certain parts takes a great deal of practice and time. Please don’t expect to be moving like an expert with only a few classes. * I’m too fat/I’m too thin/I’m too old, etc Belly dancing is for every shape, size, height and age, that’s the beauty of this style of dance. Everyone will move differently, one person will find a move so easy compared to someone else, we are all individual and move in our own way. The most important thing is that you have fun and don’t push your body too far or hurt yourself, we don’t want that! * I’m not showing my belly Don’t worry, you don’t have to. I will not be asking anyone to show their belly unless you want to. Once your body confidence grows you may find you actually want to lift your shirt just so you can see what your muscles are doing, it can make it easier to focus…but that is totally up to you. * I can’t do heavy exercise Belly dancing is a very low impact on your body if done correctly. We will focus a lot of time on your posture and constantly correct your positioning throughout the class. You will only do what your body is capable of, but, we will be doing a lot of stretching to try to loosen up your unused muscles, you’ll be surprise what your body can do with practice. Please don’t do anything you feel would / could hurt your body….only you know your body and it’s limitations. * I don’t want to dance in public Neither do I - Some dance classes have an end goal of a public performances, dance demonstrations, etc to boost their numbers but that is not what these classes are about. I simply wanted a vessel to help ladies have a bit of fun and get out of the house, while getting flexible, learning how to move your body and boost your body confidence. * I don’t like how my body looks Belly dancing will change your body shape. You may not lose much weight in the beginning but it will certainly contour your body and give it definition, in time your confidence will grow. You will also find your core stomach muscles get so strong (even if you can’t see them lol) because we need strong muscle to do a number of moves. * I’m scared, I don’t want to make a mistake The most important thing for you to remember is to have fun! Don’t take the classes too seriously, if you can’t do something or you get lost in the moves, please don’t get upset, simply laugh it off. I have attended a number of classes where I was scowled at because, when I made a mistake, my natural reaction was to laugh but the teacher didn’t like this. You will never get in trouble for having a good time, that’s what it’s all about! * I can’t make it every night That’s ok, we are not learning any set dance routines at the moment, everyone is a beginner so we are focusing just on moves to start. It’s ok if you don’t come every night however you may get a little lost if we are building on something we have previously learnt. Having said that, that is why we have the hall for the extra hour, so we can do a bit of one on one if needed/wanted. For those who make it regularly, I offer a discount of pay for 4 classes and get one class free.
